I was lucky enough to spend an amazing week with friends at the Alaska Legends Kenai River Lodge in Soldotna, Alaska in the first week of July 2022. The lodge is situated in a beautiful area right on the Kenai River. The Lodge comfortably housed our group of fifteen adults.

Each day was a new adventure all arranged by our friendly and knowledgeable staff. We went deep-sea fishing out of Seward on the Legacy. I caught my limit of 2 halibut and I also caught two cod. This was my first time deep-sea fishing and it was an incredible experience. Our lines were 150 feet down, so I admit I did need help from deck hands Marcel and Jeremy to reel them onto the boat.

We took a seaplane to Wolverine Creek the next day to fish for salmon with the bears. When we arrived, one bear was already happily eating salmon less than 10 feet from where we stopped our boat. I caught my limit of two salmon in less than an hour. Just as I was reeling in my second fish, a mama bear and three cubs came down to the water. The cubs played on the shore as mama fished for her babies.

I spent the third day relaxing at the Lodge reading a book that had been highly recommended. Once I started, I could not put the book down. The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles. Early in the morning when it was still chilly, I read nestled in front of a roaring fire. Later in the day I lounged on the patio to finish my book. A quiet, but very delightful day! My only interruptions were to indulge in the delicious meals served morning, noon and evening. That night several of us opened a bottle of wine and played corn hole.
The next morning we headed out early to explore the town of Homer which was about an hour drive away. Homer is a nostalgic town with cute shops, great fish & chips restaurants and the famous Salty Dawg Saloon. I had to order a duck fart shot (Kaluha, Crown Royal and Bailey’s Irish Cream)
